Iraqi Activist Salwan Momika Shot Dead: Investigation Underway After Controversial Protests Spark Global Backlash
Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee known for his involvement in Quran-burning protests in Sweden, was fatally shot on Wednesday night. The controversial activist had previously faced hate crime charges and had his Swedish residency permit revoked following his provocative demonstrations. Authorities have detained five individuals in connection with the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing. Due to his death, the court has postponed its ruling on his case.
Who was Salwan Momika? Salwan Momika, 38, was an Iraqi-born activist who gained international notoriety in 2023 for burning copies of the Quran in Sweden. His actions sparked outrage across the Muslim world, leading to violent protests and diplomatic tensions. On Wednesday night, Swedish authorities confirmed that Momika had been shot inside his home in Hovsjo, Sodertalje.
According to Swedish state media, “A man was found shot in a home in Hovsjo in Sodertalje late on Wednesday. It is 38-year-old Salwan Momika, who has died from gunshot wounds.” Reports suggest that the attack occurred around 11 PM, with speculation that Momika was live-streaming at the time.
Arrests and Investigation Following the shooting, Swedish police arrested five individuals, though they have not confirmed the victim’s identity or details of his injuries. The Stockholm district court had been scheduled to deliver its verdict on Momika’s hate crime charges on Thursday morning, but the case was postponed due to his sudden death.
Global Backlash Over Quran Burnings Momika, along with fellow protester Salwan Najem, carried out Quran burnings and inflammatory demonstrations in Sweden throughout 2023. Their actions led to widespread condemnation, particularly from Muslim-majority countries.
The outrage escalated into violent demonstrations, including an attack on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. In Tehran, thousands of protesters took to the streets, waving Iranian flags and holding up copies of the Quran while chanting anti-Western slogans such as, “Down with the United States, Britain, Israel, and Sweden.”
Sweden’s Response and Security Measures The Swedish government condemned the desecration of religious texts while defending free speech laws. However, as tensions grew, Sweden’s intelligence agency raised the national terror alert level to four out of five in response to increased security threats.
Momika’s Asylum and Immigration Issues Originally from Iraq, Momika fled to Sweden years ago seeking asylum. However, in October 2023, Swedish authorities revoked his residency permit, citing false claims in his asylum application.
Following the revocation, Iraq formally requested his extradition. While Swedish officials initially halted his deportation, Momika later attempted to seek asylum in Norway. Norwegian authorities denied his request and deported him back to Sweden, where he was granted a temporary one-year residence permit.
Ongoing Investigation Swedish authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Momika’s killing. Law enforcement officials have yet to disclose potential motives or whether the attack was linked to his controversial protests. The case remains under review as authorities work to uncover more details about the incident.
