Florida residents are on high alert as severe thunderstorms move across central parts of the state, bringing the risk of damaging winds, hail, and a possible tornado, according to meteorologists.
Why This Matters
Severe weather conditions can cause extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and vegetation. Strong winds may bring down trees and power lines, potentially leading to power outages and travel disruptions.
Weather Forecast & Key Updates
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning on Monday morning, cautioning that gusty winds could toss around unsecured objects, while minor hail damage to plants and structures is possible.
According to Severe Weather Outlook, a mid-level low is tracking eastward over Georgia, with a positively tilted trough advancing toward the Florida Peninsula. At the surface, a cold front is progressing southeast across the region.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-morning, moving eastward across central Florida from late morning through early afternoon. The NWS stated that a brief tornado is possible.
The Tampa Bay NWS office emphasized that the strongest storms would impact the region from the morning through early afternoon before shifting east and south later in the day.
“The Marginal Risk continues early this morning from around Tampa Bay northward, with the Storm Prediction Center adding a Marginal Risk for inland southwest Florida and the interior throughout the day,” the agency reported.
At the time of writing, a tornado warning was in effect for Lake and Orange counties.
Current Warnings & Reports
At 8:56 AM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted near Clermont, moving northeast at 35 mph.
Meteorologist Joey Crist reported on social media:
“The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, FL, has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Jackson, Holmes, and Washington counties in the Florida Panhandle until 9:00 PM CDT. A severe storm near Bonifay is moving east at 45 mph, bringing quarter-sized hail. Expect potential damage to vehicles.”
He advised affected residents in Chipley, Marianna, Bonifay, and surrounding areas to seek shelter immediately, stay away from windows, and be prepared for large hail and dangerous lightning.
Public Safety & Precautions
The NWS Melbourne office stressed that wind gusts between 40 to 60 mph are the primary hazard, with additional threats including frequent lightning, small hail, heavy rainfall, and the potential for a brief tornado.
What to Expect Next?
Meteorologists predict the severe weather threat will lessen by the afternoon as the strongest storm systems move offshore into the western Atlantic. However, residents should stay informed and heed official warnings as the situation develops.
Stay Safe & Stay Updated
Residents are encouraged to monitor local news and weather reports for updates. Taking necessary precautions, such as securing outdoor objects and having an emergency plan, can help minimize risks during severe weather events.
