Iconic Crocodile Burt, Star of ‘Crocodile Dundee,’ Passes Away Peacefully at 90

Burt, the legendary crocodile who gained worldwide fame for his role in the 1986 blockbuster Crocodile Dundee, has passed away peacefully at an estimated age of 90, according to Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Australia.
The five-meter-long, 700kg saltwater crocodile had been a resident at the zoo since 2008. The zoo confirmed Burt’s death, describing him as an “iconic” figure and a beloved star of the Australian classic.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt, the iconic saltwater crocodile and star of Crocodile Dundee,” the zoo said in a statement. “Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, estimated to be over 90 years old, marking the end of an incredible era.”
While saltwater crocodiles typically live up to 70 years, some can reach 100, making Burt’s lifespan extraordinary for his species, the largest reptile on Earth.
Captured in the early 1980s, Burt became a film sensation, starring alongside Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee just before Christmas in 1986. The film helped solidify Australia’s image as a land of rugged beauty and awe-inspiring wildlife.
The zoo reflected on Burt’s unique personality, saying, “Burt was truly one of a kind. He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years.
