Apart from Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans, who play Roberts and Hawke’s kids, Kevin Bacon also plays a conspiracy-obsessed builder.
“Leave the World Behind” marks the first fictional film executive produced by Higher Ground Productions, the Obamas’ production company, which had previously concentrated on historical plays, documentaries, and children’s shows. Screenplay from Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel was adapted by “Mr. Robot” director Sam Esmail. Alam’s book was added to the former president Obama’s list of summer reading for 2021.
“We try to capture the unknown and the fear of it in this film, having gone through the pandemic and then, take your pick of any number of other disaster-related events like climate change and the heat wave that we just experienced over the summer,” Esmail said in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“Leave the World Behind” launches on November 22 and makes its Netflix debut on December 8.
