“Although she is still in the intensive care unit, her recuperation is making steady progress. Her tenacity is really shining through!” On Saturday, McKenna Kelley provided an update.
Olympic gold champion Mary Lou Retton is still receiving treatment in an intensive care unit for acute pneumonia, but her daughter stated on Saturday that her rehabilitation has been “truly remarkable.”
McKenna Kelley posted on Instagram, “We’re thrilled to share some encouraging news.” “Prayers have been felt, and they are working. She is still in the ICU, but her recovery is making steady progress. Her tenacity is really shining through!”
According to a crowdfunding page Kelley created to generate cash for medical expenses, Kelley said Retton was suffering from a “very rare form of pneumonia” and was in severe condition. Kelley claimed that her mother lacked health insurance.
It is unknown where Retton, a Houston resident, is receiving medical care.
Retton, 55, has spent more than a week in the hospital’s intensive care unit. According to Kelley, her mother was unable to breathe on her own.
However, Retton, the five-time Olympic medalist, isn’t as dependent on equipment, and Kelley said on Saturday that Retton’s breathing “is becoming stronger.”
In the midst of this somewhat lengthy trip, the gradual appearance of beneficial improvements is nothing short of encouraging, resonating with a strong sense of optimism and advancement! Kelley recently sent a sincere statement in which she revealed the good news, writing, “We are witnessing encouraging responses to the ongoing treatments, a testament to both her resilience and the support surrounding her.” We are once more overcome with appreciation for the outpouring of support and love from each and every one of you.
Let’s now travel back in time to the legendary 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, when Retton made an everlasting impression. She became a trailblazer by becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in gymnastics and doing it with an incredible perfect score of 10 in the all-around competition. But this was only the beginning of her glorious adventure. Retton continued to make history as the Games went on, winning a staggering total of five medals, surpassing the number of every other competitor and personifying the zenith of athletic brilliance that epitomized that extraordinary summer.
Retton was a board member for USA Gymnastics after she retired and received criticism for standing up for the organization during the Larry Nassar sexual assault investigation. In 2017, USA Gymnastics declined to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee; instead, Retton and USA Gymnastics officials met with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, in private to explain the organization’s measures to safeguard athletes from sexual abuse.
