Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, denounces threats against Trump nominees and lawmakers.
A number of violent threats against Democratic members and some of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominations were strongly condemned by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. Concerns regarding public leaders’ safety in a highly sensitive atmosphere have been raised by the occurrences, which range from bomb threats to “swatting” attempts.
Jeffries said in a statement on Friday that a number of Democratic members had received threats, including calls for pipe bombs to be sent in their mailboxes and fabricated emergency reports meant to incite armed police responses, or “swatting.” The threatening notes were notably signed with “MAGA,” which is a reference to Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Fortunately, law enforcement authorities found no explosive devices or other ordnance at the homes of the targeted lawmakers. Jeffries used the opportunity to denounce such threats as antithetical to democratic values.
“America is a democracy. Threats of violence against elected officials are unacceptable, unconscionable, and have no place in a civilized society,” Jeffries stated. “All perpetrators of political violence directed at any party must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. House Democrats will not be deterred or intimidated from serving the people by violent threats. We have been in close communication with the Sergeant at Arms office, and it is imperative that Congress provide maximum protection for all Members and their families moving forward.”
Greater Consequences of the Dangers
The Biden administration and other lawmakers have responded as a result of the threats. President Joe Biden said that his government is working with the FBI to combat these threats while speaking from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
“We’re working hard with federal law enforcement to ensure the safety of all public officials,” Biden stated to reporters.
One of the lawmakers targeted was Representative Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., whose Providence house was threatened. Magaziner attested that everyone’s safety was guaranteed by the prompt action of law enforcement. “No one was harmed, and I am grateful for the prompt response of local authorities,” he stated.
A well-known Democrat, Senator Christopher Murphy of Connecticut, received a bomb threat at his home, which his spokesperson said was the result of a “coordinated effort.” Reps. Joe Courtney, John Larson, Rosa DeLauro, Jahana Hayes, and James Himes were among the other Connecticut Dem
ocrats who reportedly received similar threats.
“There is no place for political violence in this country, and I hope that we may all continue through the holiday season with peace and civility,” said Himes. Himes is familiar with the security issues associated with public office because he is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
Donald Trump Nominees Face Threats
Not just Democratic lawmakers have been targeted by the avalanche of threats. Targets have also been the Cabinet picks of President-elect Trump. While on Thanksgiving vacation in her district, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., whom Trump appointed as his ambassador to the U.N., received word of a threat on her home.
Likewise, Trump’s first choice for attorney general, former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., was in danger. A “pro-Palestinian-themed” pipe bomb threat was reported at the residence of formeLawmaker Safety

Scott Turner, a former NFL player named to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Ore., who is expected to become Secretary of Labor, are among the other Trump nominees who have been threatened. Prominent members of the private sector, including former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, Brooke Rollins, the president of the America First Policy Institute, and Howard Lutnick, the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, all reported being targeted.
The Current FBI Investigation
The FBI acknowledged its awareness of the threats in a statement following these instances. “Incoming government nominees and appointees have been the target of multiple bomb threats and swatting instances, according to the FBI. We are conducting an investigation and ensuring everyone’s safety in collaboration with our law enforcement partners,” the statement said.
In a time of increased political polarization, the magnitude of these threats underscores the growing risks that public leaders and their families must contend with. In order to safeguard public servants, Jeffries and other lawmakers have underlined the necessity of strong security measures.
