US airstrikes have targeted two Iranian Revolutionary Guards-used weapons and ammunition storage locations in eastern Syria.
According to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Iranian-backed militia groups had recently attacked US outposts in Syria and Iraq. This prompted the strikes.
The US bombings, he claimed in a statement, were “separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.”
Iran refrained from commenting right away.
The strikes occurred on Friday at approximately 04:30 local time (01:30 GMT) in the vicinity of Abu Kamal, a town bordering Iraq.
Whether anyone was injured in the most recent strikes is still unknown.
The US was the target of the strikes, which were carried out in response to several failed attacks by organizations backed by Iran. All of this began on October 17, and Mr. Austin, the US Secretary of Defense, addressed it in a statement.
US and coalition forces have been assaulted about twelve times in Iraq and four times in Syria since the conflict between Israel and Hamas started. About twenty-one US military personnel suffered minor injuries, the Pentagon reported.
According to US sources, these strikes in the area are being carried out by groups associated with Iran. Iran provides financial and military support to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
The US Secretary of Defense, Mr. Austin, stated that these attacks against US forces by organizations backed by Iran are unacceptable and must end. He added that the US would not think twice to take more action to protect its citizens if these attacks persisted.
According to the White House, President Biden specifically instructed Iran to refrain from attacking US forces in the Middle East in a rare message to their Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian issued a dire warning to Washington that if the violence in Gaza persists, the city will not be exempt from the fire engulfing the region during a UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Thursday.
In recent weeks, the US has dispatched fighter planes and warships to the area. A US official stated on Thursday that a further 900 US troops were being sent to the area.
There have been previous attacks on US bases in the Middle East, to which the US retaliated with strikes of its own.
Following the death of a US contractor by a drone assault in March, the US launched several airstrikes on groups with ties to Iran in eastern Syria.
