Most D.C. Area Schools Remain Closed for Third Day Amid Ongoing Storm Cleanup
Most school in the D.C. area will remain closed for a third consecutive day on Wednesday as the region continues to recover from the recent winter storm, which brought between 6 to 10 inches of snow. However, a few districts and federal agencies are planning to reopen.
D.C. Public School will resume in-person classes, while Alexandria City Public School will shift to virtual learning. Additionally, several other districts have m two-hour delays. Federal agencies will also be open on Wednesday, with the option for unscheduled leave or telework, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
Despite freezing temperatures and a biting wind, Tuesday’s sunny skies have enabled crews to make significant progress in clearing roads across the region. However, in some of the larger counties, reaching more remote neighborhood roads takes time, prompting some school to close for an additional day.
Below is a list of announced closings and delays for Wednesday, as of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday:

In the larger counties south and southeast of D.C., there’s about a 50-50 chance that school will remain closed for another day due to the significant snowfall and the challenges of clearing remote areas. Cold weather is exacerbating the situation, as slushy spots are expected to refreeze Tuesday night. For districts that do open, delays are likely, though on-time openings remain possible. Students are advised to complete their homework in preparation.
Closer to the District and in its northern suburbs, the likelihood of school closures is lower. Delays are still possible but are estimated at around 50-50.
Regarding federal offices, it is expected that they will be open on Wednesday. There is a slight possibility that the Office of Personnel Management will delay openings, but it’s more likely that employees will be given the option to take an unscheduled day of leave or to telework.
Overall, the region continues to recover from the storm, with ongoing efforts to ensure roads are safe and clear for travel.
