No. 1 Tennessee loses 73-43 at No. 8 Florida, ending their perfect start.
No. 1 Tennessee entered Gainesville on Tuesday night as the last undefeated team in college basketball. However, the Vols’ perfect record was shattered at Exactech Arena as they fell to No. 8 Florida, 73-43.
The first half saw Tennessee struggle immensely, missing 24 of their 29 shots and going 0-for-14 from beyond the arc. Florida capitalized on the Vols’ shooting woes, building a commanding 19-point lead by halftime. The second half brought no respite for Tennessee as the Gators continued to dominate, widening their lead and sealing a decisive victory.
Tennessee’s top scorers were Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler, each contributing 10 points. However, Lanier hit only 3 of his 16 attempts, while Zeigler went 4-for-12. Felix Okpara added eight points on 2-for-3 shooting. The remaining six Tennessee players combined for a dismal 2-for-25 from the field. The Vols’ 43 points marked their lowest score in the Rick Barnes era, surpassing their previous low of 46 points in a win over Auburn in 2023.
Florida’s performance was highlighted by Denzel Aberdeen’s 16 points and Alex Condon’s double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alijah Martin added 13 points, while Walter Clayton Jr. contributed five points, five assists, and four rebounds despite early foul trouble.
The Gators took a commanding 34-15 lead into halftime, and they quickly extended it to 25 points early in the second half. Tennessee’s struggles from the three-point line persisted as they went 1-for-7 in the opening minutes of the second half. Lanier’s lone three-pointer at 19:10 provided a brief spark but was followed by another missed attempt and a Florida three-pointer, further solidifying the Gators’ dominance.
Statistically, Tennessee’s first half was one of their worst performances in recent memory. Their 4-for-29 shooting (13.8%) was the fewest made shots in a half since 2015. Additionally, the Vols were out-rebounded 30-19, including an 11-6 deficit on the offensive glass, and committed seven turnovers leading to six Florida points.
The Vols’ next challenge will be against Texas on Saturday at the Moody Center in Austin, with a 6 p.m. Eastern Time start. This matchup will test Tennessee further as they seek to rebound from their first loss of the season. The Vols have history with Texas, having defeated them 62-58 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last March and splitting two prior meetings in the Big 12-SEC Challenge.
Igor Milicic went 2-for-7 with eight points, and Jordan Gainey went 1-for-11 with seven points.
Denzel Aberdeen scored 16 points and Alex Condon scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Florida (14-1, 1-1) defeated a No. 1-ranked team for the third time in 20 tries and for the first time at home. After receiving two early fouls, Walter Clayton Jr. finished with five points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Alijah Martin scored eighteen points.
Florida scored nine of the first 12 points after the half, increasing their lead to 25 points before the first media timeout in the second half after leading 34–15 at the half.
Historically, Tennessee has a mixed record against Florida under Rick Barnes, winning nine of the last 12 encounters. However, all three losses have come in Gainesville, including a notable 83-70 defeat in 2017, a 75-49 loss in 2021, and a 67-54 setback in 2023. In their last visit to Exactech Arena, Tennessee, then ranked No. 2, was unable to recover from an early 17-4 deficit.
The Vols’ previous meeting with Florida in Knoxville saw them secure an 85-66 victory, with standout performances such as Dalton Knecht’s 39 points. As Tennessee prepares for their upcoming game against Texas, they will look to regain their winning form and maintain their strong start to the season.
